Canadian Olympic Trials Day 6 Recap

Day six of competition at the Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials was packed with action, as the final berths to the Olympic Games were on the line, as well as a number of Junior National teams being selected at the conclusion of the meet.

Third year Vike Jon McKay swam to a fifth place finish in the Men’s 1500 Freestyle in a time of 15:35.23.  The swim, which didn’t have a best time posted by any of the top five competitors, saw only one Canadian make the Olympic Qualification Standard.

“Jon was in pretty good position at the 400 metre mark and made a nice move to stay on the FINA A standard pace at that point as a few others fell away,” said UVic Vikes Head Coach and PCS Technical Director Peter Vizsolyi.  “At about the 800 metre mark he fell off the standard pace and a few of the others re-passed him, but in the end they all came in off the standard.”

Sixteen year old Lauren Crisp swam to a lifetime best of 2:13.58 in the Women’s 200 Backstroke B Final, on the final night of competition.  Her 13th place swim set a new UVPCS Girl’s 15-17 record, as well as new UVPCS Women’s Open record.

Her performances in the 100 backstroke on Wednesday and the 200 backstroke on Sunday resulted in Crisp being named to the Canadian Junior National Team that will compete at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships at the end of August.  The meet will see competitors from countries spanning North America, Asia, and Oceania hitting the water on the island of Maui.

Also being named to a Canadian team was thirteen-year old Jessica Luo.  She was selected on Sunday night to the Canadian Youth Relay team that will travel to Bermuda in May to train and compete against international competition.

Men’s 200 IM

Fourth year Vike Brett Zollen touched the wall with a time of 2:09.11 in preliminaries of the Men’s 200 IM on Sunday morning.  His swim was a best time by over five seconds.

Women’s 200 Back

After posting a 2:14.99 in prelims, Lauren Crisp swam to a lifetime best in the finals of the Women’s 200 Backstroke in a time of 2:13.58.  Her 3rd place B Finals time came in just behind 2012 Olympic Games 200 back bronze medalist Elizabeth Beisel (American), and Claudia Lau (Hong Kong), who swam at the 2009 and 2011 FINA World Championships.

Men’s 50 Free

In the grip and rip event, Brett Zollen swam to a time of 24.60 in preliminaries.  The twenty one year old was the busiest of all UVPCS competitors at Olympic Trials with his four events.

Men’s 1500 Free

Jon McKay swam to a fifth place finish in the Men’s 1500 Freestyle in the last event at the Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials in Toronto.  His sights will now be set on building towards Summer Nationals taking place in Edmonton, Alberta, from August 4-7.
