Horner leads charge for Vikes at Canada West Championships

On the first of three days for the conference championship, the Vikes logged only one medal but several Vikes had top-10 finishes in their respective events. The men's team totals are currently held by first-place UBC (218), while the hosting Dinos trail in second with 163 points. McKay touched in 15:29.61 to grab a silver medal behind first place's Jonathan Brown of UBC (15:27.04). Craig Dagnall was sixth in 16:04.76, while Bobby Harling and Tyler Smith finished 11^th and 12^th, respectively.

Ian Mattock and Mark Grasdal were the lone Vikes competing in the men's 50-m fly, finishing 10^th and 13^th, respectively. In the 50-m breast, Richard Bourgeois was the lone Victoria swimmer to make the top-10, finishing seventh in a time of 29.44. Brett Zollen, Aidan Thirkell and Ian Brown took 12^th through 14^th in the same event.

The Vikes fell short of any medals on the women's side as Victoria Mackay finished ninth in the 800-m free in 9:46.83, while Rachael Newman was the top Vike in the 50-m fly with a time of 29.24. The Vikes had five swimmers compete in the women's 50-m breast, with Jordan Stariha finishing as the top Vike with a time of 33.67 to take ninth place. Sarah Galbraith and Kalyna Dashko were close behind in 11^th and 12^th place, respectively.

The Vikes will return to the pool tomorrow, Jan. 25-26, with preliminaries taking place in the morning and the finals beginning at 4:00 p.m. for the 50-m free, 400m IM, 100-m fly, 200-m back, 100-m breast, 200-m free and 400-m free relay.
