Hyack Invitational Day 1 Recap

Day one of the Hyack Invitational was highlighted by a number of podium finishes for the Bolts, as well as 13 year old Michael Schmidt setting a new club and meet record in the 200 breaststroke with his time of 2:30.38.  The swim was a best time for Schmidt by close to four seconds, on his way to claiming first in the boys 12-13 category.

The 12 and Under Girls 200 Medley Relay team of Lily Chen, Kali Lancaster, Anastasia Trudel, and Trinity Aragon-Scriven claimed first place in a time of 2:14.48, while the 13-14 Girls 200 Medley Relay team of Lily Chen, Laura Rincon, Kathryn Lee, and Grace MacDonald touched the wall in fifth place.  In the Girls 15-18 200 Medley Relay, Allison Hampton, Victoria von Sacken Nash, Erin Lawrance, and Kelsey Andrusak placed third in a time of 2:07.15.

On the boys’ side, the team of Nathan Chow, Kaleb Lee, Dylan Kormendy, and Taiki Hiraoka finished sixth place in the 12 and Under category.  The Boys 13-14 200 Medley Relay team composed of Jacob Rambo, Micahel Schmidt, Keir Ogilvie, and Anthony Guitierrez touched the wall in second place with their time of 1:58.08. 

Erin Lawrance found herself in three finals on the day, with two of those finishing with her on top of the podium.  Lawrance claimed first place in the Girls 16-18 200 fly in a time of 2:22.38, first place in the Girls 16-18 400 IM in a time of 5:10.99, and fourth place in the Girls 16-18 100 free in a time of 1:00.54.  

Keir Ogilvie swam to a bronze medal, and Michael Schmidt touched the wall in 8th place in the Boys 12-13 100 fly. Ogilvie’s time of 1:03.50 was a best time by half a second, while Schmidt was just off of his best time in which he posted earlier in the day during preliminaries. 

In the Girls 14-15 100 Breaststroke, Sophie Tarrant led the way with a silver medal in a time of 1:15.88.  Close behind her were teammates Kelsey Andrusak and Emily Laidman, who finished in fifth and eight place respectively.  In the Girls 16-18 100 Breaststroke, Victoria von Sacken Nash finished with a time of 1:17.85.  The time earned her a silver medal, while Allison Hampton picked up valuable points for the team with her fourth place finish in a time of 1:21.29. 

In the Girls 12-13 100 Free, Grace MacDonald placed sixth with her time of 1:02.66, while Kelsey Andrusak touched the wall in fourth place in the Girls 14-15 100 Freestyle. The Boys 12-13 200 Free saw two PCS swimmers’ find themselves on the podium.  Anthony Guitierrez claimed gold in a time of 2:06.41, and Keir Ogilvie placed 3rd in a time of 2:10.98.  Both boys swam lifetime bests in the final, with Ogilvie taking off a whopping eight seconds on the day. 

In the final event of the day, Sophie Tarrant swam to a silver medal in the Girls 14-15 400 IM.  Tarrant recently rejoined Pacific Coast Swimming after spending sixth months in New Zealand, where she competed a number of national level meets.

The Bolts are back at it Saturday and Sunday at the Canada Games Pool in New Westminster, with the Victoria squad taking on teams from all over British Columbia, Alberta, Washington State and Oregon.
