Ryan Clouston moved to Victoria at the age of six and began swimming competivley at the age of of 10. The Winnipeg native continued to swim competitively until the age of 18 before joining the University of Victoria Vikes swim team. Clouston's varsity swimming career spanned five years while he completed an undergraduate degree in physics.  He also coached lightning fast levels 3-5 on a part time basis during this time.

Clouston retired from competitive swimming following his five-year career and began his studies towards a Master's Degree in Ocean Physics at UVic. He was subsequently hired as the Assistant Head Coach at UVic in the fall of 2010, and has grown within and expanded that role to this day, and is now the Program Coach at UVic.  Additionally, Clouston has worked closely with Ron Jacks of Pacific Coast Swimming as an assistant coach and is a Level 3 NCCP Fundamentals coach.  In 2013, Clouston received a grant from the Canadian Swimming Coaches & Teachers Association (CSCTA) that enabled him to coach at various international open-water swim competitions during the summer.

Working as an Assistant Coach, Ryan coached a number of high-level athletes, including multiple World and Olympic medallists, and a number of national and international-level athletes over the years.  In 2023, Ryan was chosen as a coach to represent Canada at the 2023 World Championships in Japan.
