Canada West University Championships

UVPCS University swimmers and coach Peter Vizsolyi had a successful weekend at the Canada West University Championships.

MacKenzie Downing brought home Gold in both the 100 & 200 Butterfly, breaking two meet records in the process. The previous 200 Butterfly record was set in 2000 by two-time Olympian Jessica Deglau. David Killy celebrated his 19th birthday in fine fashion by taking Bronze in 200 Butterfly. And, in the stroke 50s, Whitney Buczkowski finished second in the 50 Backstroke with MacKenzie Downing second in 50 Butterfly - stroke 50s are not scored at Canada West and therefore medals are not awarded.

Other top-8 finishes included Whitney Buczkowski (50 Free, 100 Back), Ryan Clouston (1500 Free), Derek Doerksen (200 Back, 50 & 100 Breast), MacKenzie Downing (200 & 800 free), Colin Jones (50 Back), David Killy (100 Fly), Jessica Pietrusiak (200 Fly) and Jeff Saganski (100 Fly).

Congratulations as well to new CIS qualifier, Liz Sissons. Fourteen Vikes (8 women, 6 men) are now qualified to compete at the Canadian Intercollegiate Swimming (CIS) Championships in Vancouver, February 19-21, 2009.

Terrific thanks to our UVPCS parents and athletes who officiated at this University meet, and to those out-of-town parents and friends who contributed their time as well. In addition, thanks to all the UVic student-athletes (Vikes rugby, rowing and others) who lent a hand over the weekend.

As always, complete details are available on our results page.
