Canadian Inter-University Swimming Championships

University of Victoria Vikes coach Peter Vizsolyi and team - Whitney Buczkowski, Ryan Clouston, Carlene Creyke, Eleanora Dalling, Derek Doerksen, MacKenzie Downing, Cody Flegel, David Killy, Danielle Newton, Ben Partridge, Jessica Pietrusiak, Jeff Saganski, Annika Schmuck, Liz Sissons and David Vizsolyi competed at UBC in Vancouver this weekend at the 2009 Canadian Inter-University Swimming Championships. CIS takes place in short course (25m) format and features Canada’s best University swimmers. Athletes compete in a maximum of four individual events, and team results are tallied separately for men and women.

Amid fast swimming and fierce competition, the Vikes brought home two individual medals and numerous final placements. MacKenzie Downing claimed the team’s two medals with Silver in both 100 & 200 Butterfly; congratulations as well to A-finalists Whitney Buczkowski (7th 50 & 100 Backstroke), Derek Doerkerson (7th 200 Backstroke), Cody Flegel (8th 50 Freestyle), David Killy (8th 100 Butterfly), Jeff Saganski (6th 100 Butterfly) and Jessica Pietrusiak (8th 200 Butterfly), and to B-finalists Carlene Creyke, Eleanor Dalling, Danielle Newton, Annika Schmuck, Liz Sissons and David Vizsolyi.

Vikes men were top-8 in all three relays, with fifth for both 400 Freestyle Relay (Cody Flegel, Jeff Saganski, David Killy, Derek Doerksen) and 400 Medley Relay (Ben Partridge, Derek Doerksen, Jeff Saganski, Cody Flegel) and eighth in the 800 Freestyle Relay (Cody Flegel, Jeff Saganski, Ryan Clouston, David Killy). Vikes women were top-8 in the 400 Medley Relay (Whitney Buczkowski, Carlene Creyke, MacKenzie Downing, Danielle Newton) with seventh place.

The men also broke six Vikes records over the weekend. Cody Flegel set a new 100 Freestyle standard, held since 1982 by Olympian Wayne Kelly; Ben Partridge holds the new Vikes 50 Backstroke record, while Derek Doerksen set new standards in both 100 & 200 Backstroke. The men's 400 Freestyle and 400 Medley Relay teams also set new Vikes records.
