Chris Deegan Second at Fina UltraMarathon 32km Race in Lac St. Jean, Quebec!

In only his 2nd ever UltraMarathon Race, Chris Deegan, representing Australia (and UVPCS!) finished second overall this year!  As a Fina race series, this race always attracts some of the Ultra-Distance swimmers in the world, and to come 2nd is quite the achievement!  Chris will come away from the race with 4500 American dollars in prize money (with perhaps a 1000$ bonus if the results show he had the fastest 500m in the race, to be determined), and a lot of pride!  Chris swam with the pack until the eventual winner, Marcel Schouten from the Netherlands, decided to break away from the pack early in the race.  Chris had to make a decision to break with Marcel, or stay with the pack and make sure he didn't waste too much energy so early in the race.  Chris decided to go for it, and stay with Marcel, and broke out ahead of the rest of the pack.  This seemed to be ther right decision, as he only saw one more swimmer during the rest of the race, when the other Dutchman Lars Bottelier fought his way up to Chris and Marcel in the middle of the race.  Having spent a lot of energy to do so, however, Lars eventually fell off Chris and Marcel's pace.  In the last couple hours of the race, Marcel (a two time 5km European Champion), was able to seperate himself from Chris, and push for Gold, but our boy Chris did a great job and pushed hard for the eventual Silver Medal!  Great job Chris!
