The London 2012 Olympic Trials got off to a great start today in Montreal, with four UVPCS swimmers competing for the team: Nicholas Sinclair, Ian Mattock, Stefanie Schmidt, and Rachael Newman. Open-water trials don’t take place until June, when Richard Weinberger will have his own shot at making the team.
Nicholas Sinclair made it into the A final in the 200m Freestyle, where he finished 6th with 1:50.22, a lifetime best. The race was extremely close, with just 1.16 seconds separating 1st and 6th place. In a race with 5 potential Olympic slots up for grabs for the relay, their add-up time was not under the standard, so only 1 went through.
Ian Mattock also earned two swims and two best times in the 400 IM. His morning swim of 4:35.90 had him tied for first alternate, and during the swim off he shaved an additional 2 seconds off of this swim, coming in at 4:33.86.
Stefanie Schmidt had a strong race in the 400 Freestyle as well, touching in just a few tenths over her best time in 4:30.74.
Rachael Newman, still overcoming her case of mono, also stayed close to her best time in the 100 Fly, with 1:03.85.
