Senior Nationals Day 1 A Success for UVPCS Swimmers

Senior Nationals began today in Point-Clare, Quebec, and UVPCS had MacKenzie Downing, Nicholas Sinclair, Stefanie Schmidt, and Rachael Newman competing.  Both Nick and MacKenzie are currently in the midst of training for the FISU Games in August.

In heats, MacKenzie Downing swam both the 50 and 200 Fly, snagging a spot in the final in both events.  MacKenzie came 10th in the 50 Fly with a time of 27.96, and won the bronze medal in the 200, clocking in at 2:14.02.

Nick Sinclair swam a solid 200 Free this morning, and was the 8th place Canadian; however, because there are teams attending the meet from different countries (France, Denmark, Brazil, and the US), 3 foreigners are allowed in each final, placing Nick in the B final for the evening event.  He came in 9th place in the B final, his time being 1:54.31.

17 year old Rachael Newman competed in the 200 Free and 200 Fly, earning a personal best time (by over 2 seconds), and breaking 2:20 for the first time in her Fly.  She competed in the B final in the evening; Newman managed to improve her time even further, with 2:19.71, and move up two spots to place 18th overall.

16 year old Stefanie Schmidt had an impressive start to the meet, earning best times in both the 100 Back and the 1500 Free.  Her 1500 improved by nearly 5 seconds, and ranked her as the #1 girl heading into the finals.  Because the event is a Timed Final, there was still one more heat to go, which swam in the evening; Stefanie secured her first Nationals Top 8 Finish with a time of 17:28.72.
