SFU Clan Cup Meet

UVic swimmers took to the pool for the second time in just over a week in their continuing preparations for the Canadian Interuniversity Championships (CIS) to be held in Calgary in late-February.

The team placed 3rd overall behind the Host SFU and Calgary Dinos. Several athletes continued the team marathon tradition at this meet of competing in every individual event offered at the meet, a total of 17 events in two days, plus finals if qualified for. These athletes were: Ian Brown, Nick Sinclair, Eric Stein, and Richard Weinberger.

Gold medalists at this weekend’s meet included: Siobhan Newell (1st in 200 Free and 200 IM, 3rd in 400 IM), Ian Mattock (1st in 200IM and 400IM), Richard Weinberger (1st in the 1500 Free, 2nd in the 400 Free and 400 IM, and 3rd in the 800 Free), and Craig Dagnall (1st in 800 Free).

Silver medalists included: Nicholas Sinclair (2nd in the 100 Back and 1500 Freestyle, 3rd in the 50 Back and 400 IM), Ella Dalling (2nd in the 200 Back, 3rd in 50 Back and 100 Back), Allison Wood (2nd in 100 Back), and Aimeson King (2nd in 800 Free).

Bronze medalists were: Danielle Newton (3rd in 50 Fly, 200 IM), Derek Doerksen (3rd in 200 Back), Liz Sissons (3rd in 100 Breast), and David Vizsolyi (3rd in 200 Fly and 1500 Free).

Other finalists included Kim Bryan, Lindsay Clarke, Carlene Creyke, Shay-Anne Daniels, David Killy, Emma Milner, Ben Partridge, Julia Schmidt and Sage Sturgeon.

The SFU meet saw four more UVic swimmers achieve CIS qualifying times: Siobhan Newell, who qualified in three events (200 Free, 200 IM, 400 IM), Nicholas Sinclair who qualified in the 1500 Freestyle, Allison Wood who qualified in the 100 Backstroke, and Richard Weinberger who qualified in the 1500 Freestyle. These swimmers will join four other UVic swimmers who made the standard at last week’s Senior Circuit meet – Ella Dalling, Derek Doerksen, Aimeson King and Eric Stein.

Congratulations swimmers and coaches!
