Weinberger Rounds Out World Champs With a Third Solid Swim

After two impressive races over the past two days, Richard Weinberger drew his time at the World Championships to a close with a stellar performance in the 5km today.  The race consisted of 52 men, and took just under an hour for the main pack to complete.

The race was fast-paced and incredibly close from start to finish.  In fact, because the first group of swimmers to cross the finish line was so huge, the winner could not be ascertained except through a video playback; the difference between some of the finishes ended up being that of a millimetre, in a race that lasted almost an hour.  Heat was a major obstacle in this race, as well as the others in Shanghai, with the water temperature reaching up to 30°C.

This was another superb showing from Richard; he was the top Canadian, coming in 17th, just 17 seconds behind the winner and 3.6 seconds away from 10th place, with a time of 56:33.7.  His next focus is preparing for the Pre-Olympic 10km in London on Aug 13.
