Women Third, Men Fourth After Final Day of Canada West Swimming Championships

VANCOUVER - Three more swimmers from the University of Victoria Vikes achieved the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) standard as the Vikes women placed third, edging out Alberta by 13 points, and the Vikes men fourth at the 2011 Canada West swimming championships at the UBC Aquatic Centre in Vancouver.

Full results can be found on our Results page.

The Vikes now prepare for the CIS swimming championships to be held in Calgary, Feb. 24-26.

Vikes head coach Peter Viszolyi said he was pleased with the results and the Vikes swimmers who made CIS times. They include:

* Ian Brown (29.78 seconds) in the men’s 50-metre breaststroke, good for fourth place overall;
* Kim Bryan swam a time of 30.83 seconds in the women’s 50-metre backstroke; and
* Julia Schmidt (2:22.14) in the women's 200-metre butterfly.

"We had five kids who hadn't reached the CIS qualifying time before Christmas - now we're down to two guys who still have an opportunity to qualify. That's pretty good overall," said Vizsolyi.

A number of Vikes swam to top-three finishes:

* In the men's 1500-metre, Craig Dagnall placed second to earn silver on Day 1 with a time of 15 minutes, 33.76 seconds.
* On Day 2, Ella Dalling was third in the women’s 200-metre backstroke at 2:14.13;
* Nick Sinclair (1:59.45) and Derek Doerksen (2:00.37) placed second and third respectively in the men’s 200-metre backstroke on Day 2;
* Sinclair also placed second on the final day in the men's 400-metre freestyle at 3:52.96;
* David Vizsolyi placed third in the men's 200-metre butterfly on the final day with a time of 2:05.81, four tenths of a second faster than Vikes teammate David Killy who placed fourth;
