AAA's Day 1 Recap

PCS Boys 12 & Under 400 Medley Relay

The first day of BC Short Course Age Group Championships saw Pacific Coast Swimming show why they are three time defending Swim BC AAA Champions, as twenty swimmers found the podium.

The day started with the Boys 13 & Under 1500 Free, and Anthony Gutierrez leading the charge for the Bolts with his 6th place in a time of 18:00.19.  Dylan Kormendy finished close behind in 12th, earning valuable points for the PCS crew during the first session of the meet.

In the Girls 11 & Under 800 Free, Anastasia Trudel swam to a 3rd place finish, taking off an amazing thirty-four seconds in the process.  The swim helped her capture her first ever Age Group National time standard.  Sophie Lorette dropped over twenty seconds to finish 4th place in the Girls 12-13 800 Free in a time of 9:23.06.  In the Girls 14-15 category, Erin Jennings touched the wall in ninth place.

Three Bolts cracked the top in the Girls 16-18 800 Free with Haley Bennett touching the wall 10th in 9:07.88, Erin Lawrance posting a 3rd place performance in a time of 8:50.05, and Molly Gowans stopping the clock in the fastest time of the meet with an 8:42.87.  Both Lawarance and Gowans were well under national standard in their bronze and gold medal swims, which bodes well as they are now less than thirty-five days away from Olympic Trials in Toronto.

Pacific Coast Swimming showed that they are three time defending Provincial AAA Champions for a reason, finding themselves on the podium in five of the six categories in the 400 Medley Relay.  The 12 & Under Girls got the club started on the right foot, with the team of Lily Chen, Kali Lancaster, Kathryn Lee and Anastasia Trudel swimming to a silver medal in a time of 4:50.44.

On the boy’s side, Nathan Chow, Braeden Fitzpatrick, Dylan Kormendy and Taiki Hiraoka also captured a silver medal in a time of 4:47.18.  The time set a new Vancouver Island Regional record and Pacific Coast Swimming club record.  The squad composed of Dominic Huang, Arran Robertson, Nolan Crisp, Griffin Arnatt swam to a 9th place finish, earning the Bolts a key eighteen points in the process.

Hannah Lorette, Hana Edwards, Jessica Luo and Kelsey Andrusak continued the PCS medal haul, as they were triumphant in the Girls 13-14 400 Medley Relay.  Their time of 4:21.96 eclipsed the former Vancouver Island Regional record and club record by two seconds.  Valuable points were scored by Sophie Lorette, Laura Rincon, Kealey Scott and Grace MacDonald with the team finishing 12th in a very competitive 13-14 year old field.

The squad composed of Miyu Dobashi, Michael Schmidt, Artem Kuklev and Anthony Gutierrez matched their female teammates by finishing on top of the podium.  Their final time of 4:09.89 was a full seventeen seconds under the former Vancouver Island Regional Record set back in 2007, and over thirty seconds under the previous PCS Club Record.

The Girls 15-18 400 Medley Relay saw four Pacific Coast Swimming entries all scoring points.  The team of Anna Letkeman, Emma Carter, Kaitlyn Fuller and Erin Jennings placed 14th, while the crew of Allison Hampton, Victoria von Sacken Nash, Kennedy Aragon-Scriven and Haley Bennett finished in 12th position.   Emma Murdock, Kara Wilson, Erin Lawrance and Rachel Sawchuk touched the wall in 6th place.  The fourth PCS squad composed of Lauren Crisp, Jordan Andrusak, Allison Ballantyne and Molly Gowans captured gold for the Bolts in a new club record of 4:13.87.  The tremendous depth of Pacific Coast Swimming was on full display as two of the four relay teams went under the previous club record set back in 2010, while the third and fourth teams were within four seconds of it.

In the last event of the evening, Mathew Fuller, Cale Murdock, Justin Howe and Lucas Tyler picked up a fourteen points for Pacific Coast Swimming with their 10th place finish.

After one day, Pacific Coast Swimming sits atop of the team point totals, with Hyack Swim Club close behind.  Friday’s event lineup includes 200 IM, 100 back, 50 breast, 200 fly, 400 free, and the 200 freestyle relay.
