AAA's Day 4 Recap - Records fall on night four, as Bolts hold on to lead heading into final day of competition
The fourth day of the Swim BC AAA Long Course Provincial Championships saw Pacific Coast Swimming battle hard to hold on to their lead over Hyack Swim Club in the team standings. “Tonight was quite exciting,” said Rod Barratt, Director of Athlete Development for Pacific Coast Swimming. “We knew going into day four that Hyack would chip away at our lead based off of the event lineup, but we had good swims across the board tonight to keep that to a minimum.”
With their strong day four performance, the Bolts head into the final day of competition with a two hundred thirty one point lead in the standings. The lead puts them in a great position to successfully defend their provincial championship crown for their fifth consecutive time.
The night started off with two gold medal performances from lane six for the Bolts. In the Girls 12-13 200 Fly, Sophie Lorette led from the get go, and held off a late surge from the field to win in a time of 2:21.11. Keir Ogilvie captured gold in the Boys 12-13 200 Fly, with his final fifty-meter push to swim away from his competitors.
Jessica Luo swam to a new club record of 2:20.43, on her way to a gold medal in the Girls 14-15 200 Fly. Luo turned at the one hundred meter mark well ahead of her competition, and swam a strong back one hundred meters for the win.
In the Boys 16 & Over 200 Fly, Jon McKay swam to a bronze medal in a time of 2:06.80. Erin Lawrance and Artem Kuklev picked up valuable points for Pacific Coast Swimming with their 8th place finishes in the Girls 16 & Over 200 Fly and Boys 14-15 200 Fly respectively.
In the Girls 12-13 100 Breast, Hana Edwards touched the wall in a time of 1:17.64 to capture a bronze medal. Teammate Laura Rincon was close behind with her 4th place finish in 1:17.79. Sophie Tarrant touched 3rd behind 2016 Olympian Kierra Smith in the Girls 16 & Over 100 Breast. Tarrant’s time of 1:13.53 set a new club record, in which she had already set in the prelims of the event.
The Boys 12-13 100 Breast saw Michael Schmidt and Brendan Fitzpatrick take 1st and 2nd place respectively. Schmidt finished with a final time of 1:10.17, while Fitzpatrick touched the wall in 1:11.63. Teammate Dylan Kormendy swam to a 7th place finish the round out the event for the Bolts.
Sophie Lorette found the podium for the second time on the evening, winning bronze in a time of 2:12.30 in the Girls 12-13 200 Free. Teammate Jessica Luo stayed golden on the night, taking the Girls 14-15 200 Free in a time of 2:06.83. Luo turned at the one hundred fifty meter wall tied for 1st, but pulled away from Octavia Lau of Hyack Swim Club in the final fifty meters to win the race by two seconds. Erin Lawrance touched the wall in 7th place in the Girls 16 & Over 200 Free in 2:07.89.
Anthony Gutierrez added to the Pacific Coast Swimming medal haul, with a gold medal performance in the Boys 12-13 400 Free. Gutierrez led from the first fifty of the race and never looked back, winning by close to six seconds. Jon Mckay followed up his 3rd place finish in the 200 Fly with a bronze medal in the Boys 16 & Over 400 Free in a time of 4:02.30. Veteran leader Stefan Nasedkin set a personal best in his 400 free on the day by clocking in at 4:16.14. The time placed him 8th in the B Final of the Boys 16 & Over category. Nasedkin has been with the Bolts for a number of years, and will be moving to Asia at the end of the season to teach.
The relay team of Taiki Hiraoko, Nolan Crisp, Nathan Chow, and Griffin Arnatt touched the wall in a time of 4:38.75 to claim the bronze medal in the Boys 12 & Under 400 Free Relay.
In the Boys 14 & Under 400 Free Relay, Pacific Coast Swimming had two relays place in the top eight, earning them valuable points to finish off the evening. The team of Michael Schmidt, Keir Ogilvie, Anthony Gutierrez, and Artem Kuklev placed second in a time of 3:55.17, while Brendan Fitzpatrick, Brendan Chow, Tom Chapman, and Jacob Rambo finished in 8th position. The silver medal performance by Schmidt, Ogilvie, Gutierrez, and Kuklev set a new club record by thirteen seconds. The previous record in the event had stood since 2008.
