BC Provincial Champs: Day 4 and Full Meet Recap

On the final day of BC Provincial Championships, UVPCS won the men’s side, followed by a close second place in the overall combined score. The top three teams were Langley Olympians with 1018 points, UVPCS with 958 points, and Island Swimming with 933 points. Congratulations to all of our athletes who swam hard all weekend and to our many parent volunteers who helped make this weekend a great success.

The top UVPCS point scorer was Bill Dongfang, with 137 points, who also set a second provincial record in 100 Butterfly at 56.73. His time also qualified him for Canadian National champs this summer. 

The evening began with Naeva Scott-Bouris winning the 800m Freestyle in a best by 6 seconds. Her time was under the Open Trials cut in a time of 9:11. Teagan Hunt was 16th.

In the 200 Medley Relay, UVPCS were consistently in the mix. Our 15&U boys finished 6th (Dongfang, Poulin, Crisp, Robertson) in 1:45. The 14&U Girls team moved up to 5th and just out of the medals (Ponce De Leon, B Rupert, Sidney B., Marcovitz) in 1:56. The 15&O Women team took the bronze by .08 seconds at 1:50.2 (Chen, Scott-Bouris, MacDonald, Attwell) and the 16&O Men’s team placed second by .10 seconds for the silver in 1:38.9. 

In 200 Fr, Bill Dongfang fought hard to take the silver in a new PB at 1:57.0 in 15&U, while Cale Murdock handily won the 16&O in 1:53. Teammate Gutierrez moved on up to 10th slicing over 2 seconds off his best previous result in 1:58.

Ian Goodyear was very consistent across the weekend and Sunday was no different, taking Bronze in 100 Fly (PB of 1:20) and Gold in 50 Free, also a PB.

On the able bodied side, 13 year old Bridget Rupert lowered her prelim time to 1:07.3, adding her name to the Western and Junior National Championships list, and finishing 7th. Mariana Ponce De Leon took 10th in the Consolation final with an even faster 1:06.9, also stamping her ticket to Western and Junior Nationals. Sydney Meldrum held her position and improved on her time from prelims to take 10th (15&O) in 1:06.7.

Also in 100 Fly, Bill Dongfang competed in his 7th individual event, and swam away with the 15&U gold and new Provincial Record at 56.7. Jake Rambo placed second in the B Final for 10th overall and a PB at 57.8. 

In the 50 Free, Mariana Ponce de Leon placed 12th (14&U) and Bridget Rupert placed 16th. Lily Chen took top spot in the B Final (15&O) in 27.81, while Grace MacDonald came 11th. 

In the 200 IM, Mariana Ponce de Leon was the sole UVPCS competitor in the event final, placing 11th in 2:32.

Rambo, Gutierrez, Poulin and Van Maren were tough in the 400 IM on the men's side. Jake Rambo snagged the bronze with a PB at 4:35. Gutierrez moved up but was just over his PB from prelims, where he snuck under the Junior National Qualifying time for the first time in this event. On the younger side, Luke Poulin got in on a scratch and made the most of it moving way up to finish 13th at 5:08, qualifying him for Western Champs. Jasper van Maren finished 16th, a little off his prelim time. 

In the 100 Bk, Lily Chen was the lone UVPCS final qualifier in he women’s side taking 13th spot in a 1:08.2. On the men’s side, Dongfang was at it again. It took at PB of 5 seconds to take the bronze (1:00.75), while 13 year old Nolan Crisp had his best race of the weekend cruising to 1:02, winning the B Final. Jake Rambo was back on the podium in the 100m event for the bronze (1:00) in 16&O. Tom Chapman finished his meet with a PB of 1:01.8 to win the B Final.
