Day 2 & 3 of CIS

Day two and three of CIS Championships included an impressive five medal wins for our Uvic swimmers.

On Friday, Stephanie Horner qualified for FISU games and captured a gold medal in the 200m Butterfly, with a time of 2:12.93.  Andre Kudaba also took part in the 200 Butterfly, competing in the consol final, and finishing up in 2:09.42.  Kudaba additionally competed in the B final for the 50 Backstroke, snagging 15th place with a time of 56.25.

The second medal of the night came courtesy of the swimmer awarded CIS Rookie of the Year, Eric Hedlin.  He won the silver in the 400 Freestyle, touching in at a time of 3:52.95.

The relays produced great results, especially considering many of the swimmers were under the weather, and couldn’t compete.  The Men’s 4x200 relay team came in 5th place with a time of 7:22.17, while the Women slid into 11th place in 8:36.71.

On the final day of the meet, UVic Men swept the podium in the 1500 Freestyle; this was the only podium sweep from any team for the entire meet!  Hedlin and Will Brothers swam their heat in the finals, and took home gold and silver, while Richard Weinberger managed to place 3rd overall from his morning swim.  Three other men earned UVic points in the 1500, making it by far the best event for the Vikes this meet.  Craig Dagnall placed 7th in 15:40.83, with open-water swimmer Aimeson King touching in just behind in 8th, at 15:41.34.  Zac Parkes rounded out the event in 14th spot.

Ian Mattock, still battling with illness, swam to a personal best time in the 200IM with 2:04.59, and earned himself a second swim in the consolation final, where he placed 14th overall.

Other notable performances on Saturday night had three swimmers seeing the consolation finals.  Nicholas Sinclair competed in the 200 Backstroke, coming 13th with a time of 2:02.39, along with the 200IM, where he placed 12th overall in 2:05.35.  Kudaba competed in the 200 Backstroke alongside Sinclair, just getting out touched for the 13th spot, with 2:02.50.  Richard Bourgeois took part in his second B final of the meet with the 50 Breaststroke, placing 13th overall in 29.35.

For the Women, Stephanie Horner also took part in a B final in the 200IM, placing 10th overall.

The Medley relays for Men and Women placed 12th and 10th respectively.

The meet’s final tally of points found the Vikes Men in 4th place, and the Women in 12th.
