Richard Weinberger - 5th in 10KM race at worlds - Updated

After a hard fought race, Richard Weinberger has come 5th in the 10KM open water race at World Championships in a time of 1:49:19.9, finishing 8.1 seconds behind winner Spyridon Gianniotis.  Congratulations Richard!

Richard was 45th of 66 swimmers a quarter the way through the race, and 52nd halfway through the race, almost a minute behind the pack, before surging to first at the three quarter mark going into the final lap of the 4 lap race.  Richard mistakenly swam around the wrong side of one of the buoys right before the halfway mark of the race, and lost appoximately a minute, and the main pack.  Over the next 2.5 km, Richard had already caught and passed the whole pack, but had expended more energy than he wanted to at that point making up for his mistake.  It was less than ideal, but coming back from that kind of deficit to come 5th overall shows what he can do.

An article complete with interviews of both Richard Weinberger and coach Ron Jacks can be found on the Swimming Canada website here: https://www.swimming.ca/NewsArticle.aspx?newsid=3725

Richard next swims the 25km race at World Championships on Saturday.  It will be his first race of that distance, but we like his chances.
