Western Canadian Open Day 1 Recap

The first finals session at the Speedo Western Canadian Open was an exciting one, as nine Pacific Coast Swimming swimmers hit the water in beautiful Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The night started with 13 year old Jessica Luo setting the tone for the Bolts, with a best time and Senior Nationals Standard in the 50 fly with a time of 28.79.  The time was good enough for 6th place in the 15 & Under category.  The momentum built by Luo was carried through as Allison Ballantyne also eclipsed the 29 second mark and narrowly missed her Senior National Standard.  The time placed her second in the B Final of the 16 & Over category.

16 year old Molly Gowans stole the show with a blistering 2:00.93 to win the 200 Freestyle in the 16 & Over category.  Erin Lawrence was not far behind, as she swam to a personal best of 2:06.91 and a 2nd place finish in the B Final of the 16 & O 200 Free.  The Bolts weren’t done there, as Jessica Luo was back in the water for her second finals swim of the night.  Rising to the occasion, Luo swam a best time of 2:07.38, and was clear of the field as she touched the wall in 1st place in the B Final of the 15 & Under Category.

Hannah Lorette swam to a best time of 1:07.03 in the 100 back, and secured a 6th place in the 15 & Under category for the Bolts.  Lauren Crisp put together a great swim out of lane eight, moving up to finish 5th in the girls 16 & Over 100 back in a time of 1:04.09.  Gowans was close behind, as she captured a 6th place in a time of 1:05.05.

In the 200 Breaststroke Hana Edwards improved on her morning swim to finish 5th in the 15 & Under B Final.  Her time was within 0.1 of her best and the swim sets her up well for the events to come over the rest of the weekend.  Jordan Andrusak had her second best time of the day in the 200 Breaststroke, moving up one spot to place 2nd in the 16 & Over B Final.

In the last individual event of the night, Molly Gowans once again proved to be a force, as she touched the wall 1st in the 800 Freestyle - over two body lengths ahead of the next competitor.

The last event of the day saw two PCS relay teams put together great performances in the 4X100 Freestyle relay.  The team of Jessica Luo, Erin Lawarnce, Allison Ballantyne and Molly Gowans swam to a fourth place finish, while teammates Lauren Crisp, Haley Bennet, Jordan Andrusak and Kennedy Aragon-Scrivens swam to an eleventh place finish.
