NRST Spring Sprint 2009

The annual NRST Spring Sprint yielded lots of best times and top-8 performances from UVPCS swimmers!

Earning first place ribbons were Hanna Carter, Caileigh Filmer, Ryan Howe, Evan Letkeman, Annie MacIntosh, Lauren McMillan, Victoria Mock, Rosie Moulton, Austin Nolt, Akila Sato-Gaudreau, Jade Simpas, Brenden Ward and Tabitha Zammit.

Top-3 finalists were Emma Carter, Samantha Gibson, Patricia Horwood, Victoria Jetko, Alexandra Kierstead, Josh Stebeck and Ariyan Suleman.

Mel Zajac International Invitational 2009

Strong international competition at the Mel Zajac Invitiational featured UVPCS swimmers placing in top-8 and top-16 positions. Leading the pack, MacKenzie Downing finished top-8 in all three Butterfly events with second, fourth and seventh places in the 200, 100 and 50 metres, respectively; while David Creel was fifth in the 1500 Freestyle event. In B-finals, Nicholas Sinclair placed in all three Backstroke events, at 13th, 14th and 15th for descending 200, 100 and 50 metres, respectively.

ISA May Invitational

UVPCS results from the Island May Invitational featured Sophia Borchers, MacKenzie Downing, Lauren McMillan and Rosie Moulton in first-place finishes. Also in the top 3 were Nival Bissoon, Salin Bol, Hanna Carter, Michael de Clare, Caileigh Filmer, Katelyn Hayward, Evan Letkeman, Ian Mattock and Rachael Newman. Rounding out the top-8 were Emily Ding, Kody Flegel, Ryan Howe, Alexandra Kierstead, Remy Mock, Victoria Mock, Stephen Olmos, Julia Schmidt, Brenden Ward and Allison Wood.

Silver, Bronze for Bol at BC-AB Dual Meet

Swimming for Team BC, UVPCS swimmer Salin Bol took double Silver and a Bronze medal to complete the BC-Alberta Dual Meet in Kamloops on April 25th. Congratulations Salin! Also on Team BC, teammate Aidan Thirkell was unfortunately unable to compete in his indivudal events due to injury.

Sixth Annual PCS Wavemaker!!

Eight teams and 183 swimmers from BC and Washington descended on Saanich Commonwealth Place for the Sixth Annual PCS 14 & under Wavemaker Invitational and we had a great time underneath the palm trees and bouncing beach balls. Officials set a fine standard for beach wear (even one grass skirt) and competitors enjoyed ice cream ... that is...carrots... on the final morning after heats. Fun and fast swimming!

UVPCS swimmer named to SNC Prospects Team

UVPCS swimmer Caileigh Filmer has been named to the Swim-Natation Canada (SNC) Prospects team and will travel to the
North American Challenge Cup in Veracruz, Mexico, August 2-8, 2009. Congratulations to Caileigh and her coach Rod Barratt!

UVPCS swimmers named to two BC teams

Swim BC has named its Canada Games team, which includes UVPCS swimmers Nicholas Sinclair and Richard Weinberger. As well, UVPCS swimmers Salin Bol and Aidan Thirkell have been named to Team BC for the April BC-Alberta Dual meet in Kamloops. Congratulations, all, and congratulations as well to coaches Rod Barratt and Ron Jacks!

2009 Spring Can-Am SWAD Championships

UVPCS swimmer Stephanie Dixon posted two Gold medals at the 2009 Spring Can-Am SWAD Championships in Gresham, Oregon over the weekend. Gold arrived in the 200 Freestyle & 50 Backstroke events. Congratulations Stephanie! (Steph also provided proof that even world record holders are DQ'd every now and then, here in the 50 Butterfly event...oops.)

National SC Champs - Creel qualifies for Rome Worlds - 2 BC Records for Sinclair

Swimmers Ryan Clouston, David Creel, MacKenzie Downing, Cody Flegel, Nicholas Sinclair, David Vizsolyi and Richard Weinberger with coaches Ron Jacks and Peter Vizsolyi are representing UVic-PCS at the National Short Course Championships in Toronto this week. The competition runs from Wednesday March 11th through Sunday March 15th at the University of Toronto. Most races are preliminaries and finals; the distance events 800 & 1500 Freestyle are timed finals, as are relays.

Provincial Short Course Championships

Provincial Spring Championships take place over four days, February 26th – March 1st, in the 25m (short course) pool configuration. These are age-group championships featuring swimmers up to 18 years of age. Preliminary heats swim in two age categories (12 & under and 14-18 years) while finals are set in 11 & under, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16-18 year old categories. Distance events (women’s 800 and men’s 1500 Freestyle) and relays are timed finals. Relays swim in age categories 12 & under, 14 & under and 18 & under.
