2018 USA Open Water Nationals

Eric Hedlin and Jon McKay raced the 10km race at the USA Open Water Nationals this morning.  They both had good races, and placed 7th and 8th overall respectively, and placed 1st and 2nd Canadians overall.  This is a good improvement for Eric over recent results, and a great result for Jon, who has never raced in a big Open Water competition, and no Open Water races at all for 3 years.  The top 6 separated from Eric and Jon's group on the third of four laps.  Afterwards, Eric and Jon both separated from the chase group to try and bridge the gap but were ultimately unable to catch the frontr

Ron Jacks mentors Chatham coach Brian Lindsay!

Swimmers might have seen a new coach on deck last week as head coach of the Chatham Y Pool Sharks - Brian Lindsay - was in town for a week working with coach Ron Jacks.  Brian earned a grant from the 2017-2018 CSCTA Canadian Mentorship Program to fly out for a mentorship opportunity with Ron, to learn more about coaching in the world of Open Water Swimming.  Brian has had swimmers with the Open Water swims at Age Group Nationals, and was able to learn a fair bit about how we train our international athletes and what kind of work it takes to be competitive at that level.

Men Take Second in Team Score!

Having home turf advantage didn't hurt! UVPCS came up big all four days of Westerns. At 28 athletes UVPCS was the largest club team at the competition. Michael Schmidt, Jake Rambo and Keir Ogilvie lead the scoring with 99, 89 and 111 pts respectively.

MacKenzie Downing Inducted Into the UVic Vikes Hall of Fame!

MacKenzie came to Victoria in the fall of 2004 and quickly became one of UVic's and PCS' best swimmers.  She represented PCS from 2004 through 2011, during which she swam for Team Canada at the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games, two Pan Pacific Championships, and three FISU games competitions.  MacKenzie won a Gold, Silver and Bronze at the 2007 FISU games, broke three Canadian Records in her career, won 7 national Gold Medals, 17 CIS Medals, and won numerous athletic and academic honours along the way.  She always strived for more every step of the way, and did everything she cou

Margaret Penning Wins Sport BC Presidents' Award!

Margaret Penning was recently recognized by Swim BC, winning their annual Presidents' Award.  The annual Presidents’ Awards, presented by Sports with Balls, now in its 24th year, are presented to volunteers from Sport BC member and partner organizations who represent the spirit of volunteerism, and whose dedication, energy and commitment contribute to the development of their sport or organization in the province of British Columbia.  Congratulations Margaret!

Mid-March Madness Long Course Meet in Nanaimo

39 Pacific Coast Swimming athletes travelled to Nanaimo to compete in the 1 day Mid March Madness Long Course Meet. This was the first long course meet of the season so it was exciting to see all the best times.

Day 3 of the Swim BC Tier 2 Winter Championships

Day 3 of the Swim BC Tier 2 Winter Championships was UVPCS best day of the meet with 4 A Finals and 1 B Final.

During the preliminary session Naeva Scott Bouris placed 4th in the 13-14 Girls 800 Freestyle Timed Final with a new personal best time, along with her teammate Teagan Hunt who finished the race in 12th place.

In the Girls 15-18 800 Freestyle Jane Maycock dropped a whopping 9 seconds off her best time.

Day 2 of the Swim BC Tier 2 Winter Championships

On Day 2 of the Swim BC Tier 2 Winter Championships UVPCS had 1 A Final swim and 2 B Final swims.

Kali Lancaster was the first UVPCS swimmer to step up on to the blocks for the 13-14 Girls B Final in the 200 Breastroke in which she swam to a 13th place finish and was slightly off her personal best time.

Sydney Meldrum was our second swimmer of the night who competed in the 13-14 Girls 100 Butterfly B Final but unfortunately was DQ’d for a 1 hand touch on one of her turns.

Day 1 of the Swim BC Tier 2 Winter Championships

On Day 1 of the Swim BC Tier 2 Winter Championships Hosted by the Kamloops Classic Swim Club UVPCS started off the competition with a silver medal for Naeva Scott Bouris in the 13-14 Girls 1500 Freestyle which was a timed Final Event during the preliminary session.

Her teammate Teagan Hunt swam to a 4th place finish respectively also in the 13-14 Girls 1500 Freestyle.

Jane Maycock swam to an 8th Place finish in the 15-18 Girls 1500 Freestyle.

UVPCS and Vikes Legend MacKenzie Downing to be inducted into the UVic Sports Hall of Fame!

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria is pleased to announce the 2018 class for the UVic Sports Hall of Fame to be honoured at the Annual Celebration of Champions banquet on Apr. 4 at the Victoria Conference Centre. Vikes women's swimmer MacKenzie Downing, a five-time CIS All-Canadian and 17-time CIS medal winner, will be the lone individual inductee, while the 1987 women's cross country championship winning team and the 1994 to 1997 men's cross country championship dynasty will round out the three inductions set to be honoured for 2018.
