Vancouver Island Regional LC Championships

Vancouver Island Region Long Course Championships took place this past weekend at Saanich Commonwealth Place. UVPCS sent 83 swimmers to the meet – our largest team to date! Congratulations to everybody on best times, best placings, second swims, medals and new qualifying swims. Particular congratulations to the following swimmers and their coaches:

The US and Canadian World Open Water Trials 5km Race

The US and Canadian World Open Water Trials concluded June 6, 2010 with the 5 km race.

In the men's five kilometre, Deni Cullom led the US to a 1-2-3 finish.

Amongst the Canadians Richard Weinberger was sixth; followed by Simon Tobin of Ste-Foy, Que., eighth and Aimeson King of Victoria ninth with the top-nine were all within a minute of each other.

Weinberger will represent Canada at the Worlds in both the 5km and the 10 km as the fastest Canadian.

Weinberger Top Canadian at Canada/US World Open Water Championship Trials

UVPCS’ Richard Weinberger was the top Canadian in today’s 10 km Men’s Open Water Championship Trials in Long Beach, California. In a large field of 47 swimmers, Weinberger took fifth spot overall in a time of 1:57:19.467. His time was less than five seconds behind that of the winner, world championship bronze medalist Fran Crippen from the US (who finished in a time of 1:57.14.728). As one of the top two Canadians, Richard earned himself a berth on the Canadian team for the world open water swimming championships that will take place in Roberval, Quebec , July 17-23, 2010.

Richard Weinberger Fastest Canadian in Long Beach: Earns Spot on Worlds' Team

Canada's team spots for the 10-kilometre races at the upcoming world open water swimming championships are set.

Richard Weinberger of Victoria, Simon Tobin of Ste-Foy, Que., Zsofia Balazs of Toronto and Nadine Williams of Edmonton qualified at team trials Friday in Long Beach, Calif., for the open water swimming race.

The race was also a world team trials for the Americans as well as their national championships.

NRST Spring Sprint Meet

The annual NRST Spring Sprint yielded lots of best times and top-8 performances from UVPCS swimmers!

Earning first place ribbons were Lauren Crisp, Kristopher Neilson, Jade Simpas and Heidi Ullrich.

Top-3 finalists were Finn Barker, Emma Carter, Michael De Clare, Shaun Gill, Rory Hills, Justin Howe, Anna Letkeman, Ann MacIntosh, Stephen Olmos, Jackson Sinclair, Rebecca Thompson, Brenden Ward and Tabitha Zammit.

Mel Zajac International Invitational Meet

Strong international competition at the Mel Zajac Invitiational featured UVPCS swimmers placing in top-8 and top-16 positions. Leading the pack, MacKenzie Downing finished first in the 200 Butterfly event with a second place finish in the 100 Butterfly. She was followed closely by Nicholas Sinclair who placed second in the 200 Backstroke event and 6th in the 400 Freestyle; Ian Mattock who finished in the top 8 in the 200 IM; and Zac Parkes who did the same in the 1500 Freestyle. .
