VICTORIA – Four years ago, local athlete Lauren Crisp wanted nothing to do with swimming and thought she raced her last lap inside Saanich Commonwealth Place.

Three years later, she changed her mind and now has a pair of U SPORTS National Swimming Championship medal to show for it.

"It's crazy. It's insane. I can't believe I actually medalled - twice," said Crisp. "It still feels super surreal for me, coming back this year after three years, I never really considered this to be an option for me."

One of the University of Victoria Vikes best medal hopefuls capped off a dream individual U SPORTS National Swimming Championship run - she still has one more relay race remaining.

On Day 1, she won a pair of events where the gold evaded her grasp in the past.

"Honestly, I haven't been thinking too much about my races or performances. I just get in, try to do my best and whatever happens, happens," said Hanus.

VICTORIA – At Canada West meets, Danielle Hanus has brought home multiple golds and she has been a medal hopeful in many U SPORT meets. On Day 1 of the U SPORTS National Swim Championship at Saanich Commonwealth Place, she thrilled the hometown crowd with a pair of golds.

"It's pretty surreal right now. It's always fun racing at this meet and we have a great home pool advantage, getting to train here everyday," said Hanus. "I'm pretty stoked for the rest of the weekend. We have a lot of swimmers dropping times and giving it their all out there."

ADELAIDE, Australia – Victoria’s Jon McKay posted a pair of top-five finishes in a strong international field at the Australian Open Water Swimming Championships over the weekend.
 

Jon McKay and coach Ron Jacks were in Australia over the weekend, competing at the very competitive Australian Open Water National Championships.  Along with Australia's best, some of the sport's top swimmers, including Olympic Gold Medallist Ferry Weertman, and World Champion Jordan Wilimovsky.

Tickets are now available for purchase for the 2020 USport Championships, taking place at Saanich Commonwealth February 20 - 22.  The USport Championships are the biggest University Swim Meet in Canada each year, serve as the National Championship competition, and is always one of the most exciting meets in the country.  Come cheer on your Vikes!

VANCOUVER – The University of Victoria Vikes shook off the holiday rust with a pair of meets over the weekend in the Lower Mainland.
 
First up was a quad meet against the host Simon Fraser University Clan, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks.
 
A point-based event, only the top two swimmers from each school in each event scored points.
